Architect
Cannon Design, Chicago
Project
Illinois Institute of Technology Research Institute
Location
The Illinois Institute of Technology’s 120-acre Main Campus at 33rd and State streets in Chicago. Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, who directed the architecture program at IIT from 1938 to 1958, designed the campus and many of its buildings.

Program

Cannon Design will restore and convert a landmarked Mies van de Rohe-designed building into state-of-the-art science-research laboratories. The act of restoration and conversion acts as recycling on a large scale, through the reuse of 100 percent of the building’s original shell and 10 percent of its overall construction materials. New materials and systems conform to a high environmental standard; they include highly reflective roofing materials; water-efficient plumbing fixtures such as low-flow faucets and toilets; paints, carpets, composites, adhesives, and sealants with low VOC content; and HCFC- and Halon-free refrigeration and fire suppression equipment.
