Project
Lakefront Supportive Housing/Near North
Location
Clybourn Avenue in Chicago, south of the Cabrini-Green
public housing project.
Program
The 47,000-square-foot building, developed and maintained
by the nonprofit Lakefront Supportive Housing, contains 96 affordable
units ranging in area from 245 square feet to 263 square feet. The building’s
modern aesthetic of exposed construction materials is itself an environmental
tactic, as it requires the use of few finishes. A curved, highly reflective
skin of steel and glass encloses the building’s concrete structure.
On the roof, solar-collector arrays and wind-turbine systems will generate
power to heat water and supplement the building’s electrical needs.
The site will be developed with as much permeable surface as possible,
such as grass, gravel, and concrete pavers with sand joints. Rainwater
will collect in underground cisterns, for use in the building’s
heating and cooling system.
