Program
The South Shore Drill Team Center is an activity and education center for area youths. The facility provides practice and performance space for The South Shore Drill Team & Performing Arts Ensemble, and exploits several environmentally friendly design strategies. The roof over the main gymnasium/auditorium space features a green roof that doubles as an educational garden for area youths. Indigenous flora and fauna, planted in strips, can also be viewed through windows from inside the building; labels on the glass provide information about the plantings outside. The roof garden is irrigated with collected storm water. The main, gymnasium space of the building converts into a 600-seat theater via a movable seating system. Skylight openings in the roof provide natural day lighting and allow the space to be naturally ventilated. There are few windows on the building’s south and west sides, thereby reducing heat gain. Thermally efficient glazing is employed throughout to reduce energy consumption. Porous paving materials in the parking lot, playground, and other outdoor areas assist in the management of stormwater.
