History of Chicago Architecture:
Daring Design on the Prairie
This course traces the growth of Chicago’s
unique architectural legacy, and considers the built environment
in which we live every day. Participants will learn about the development
of the skyscraper, as well as the work of Frank Lloyd Wright and
other Prairie School architects.
INSTRUCTOR Tim
Wittman is one of Chicago’s leading architectural historians
and currently teaches at Columbia College Chicago and the School
of the Art Institute of Chicago. He holds a Master of Arts in Art
History from the University of Chicago.
Architectural Drawing: How to Sketch Like
an Architect
Learn how to rapidly document buildings in
your own graphic vocabulary. This class stresses a formulaic approach
to developing compositions using thumbnail diagrams and basic, non-technical
perspective. Emphasis will be placed on loose, free hand drawing
techniques in lieu of technical drawing. This class is appropriate
for beginners with no experience.

(please purchase before start of class) Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain
by Betty Edwards; pencils – 4h/h/hb/b/2b/4b; pencil sharpener;
pens; white eraser; 9x12” spiral or loose bound sketch pad

Hunting for Your Home's History
Learn how to use primary sources, online resources
and local libraries to research Chicago homes built before World
War II. In addition to classroom lectures, the course includes three
off-site visits to explore research methods (Newberry Library, Daley
Library at UIC and the case study neighborhood).
Please dress for the weather and be prepared to do some walking.
Each session includes a short lunch break—please bring lunch
or visit a local eatery.
