Applying
math
Math has been integrated
throughout The Architecture Handbook
because it is an important tool for understanding the built
environment. Each chapter includes a series of 10–15
math problems directly related to the chapter content. In
addition, many of the Short Activities and Long Activities
utilize math skills.
For mathematics teachers
Contextual mathematics provides teachers with the opportunity
to integrate architecture into their coursework, helping students
who struggle to make connections to real-world applications.
For career and technical
education (CTE) teachers
CTE courses, such as architectural drafting, strive to integrate
mathematics into the curriculum. The problems included in
the book are intended for use by non-math teachers to reinforce
math concepts that may be familiar to early high school students.
In addition, the CD-ROM includes a complete set of construction
drawings for the F10 House. The block plan, site plan, floor
plans, elevations, and section drawings offer opportunities
for students to do a number of projects related to scale,
area, perimeter, volume, amounts of materials, and conversion
between inches and feet/inches.
