In addition
to the math problems and readings
in each chapter, The Architecture
Handbook contains 4 integrated
projects that were developed by teams of academic subject teachers.
These lesson plans, which range from 2-5 days in length, meet
academic standards and address topics already taught as part
of a standard curriculum.
A one-page explanation of each integrated project is included
in the teacher manual and the complete lesson plans are included
on the accompanying CD-ROM.
Architecture + Language
Arts
This project uses The Jungle
by Upton Sinclair to explore issues related to the elevation
– or front façade – of residential buildings.
The lesson focuses on the persuasive language used in advertisements
and explores a chapter in the book where the Rudkus family searches
for a new home.
Architecture + Life Science
This project uses landscape architecture as a tool to teach
students about plant life and climate. The lesson looks at three
different biomes and has students develop a landscape plan for
one of the climates.
Architecture + Social Sciences
This project explores how neighborhoods change over time, using
a home in Chicago as a case study. Students explore what can
be learned about history and neighborhood change by examining
the life of one building. To conduct the research, students
use a variety of primary source documents including: historic
and contemporary census data, land use maps, fire insurance
maps, oral histories, and historic photographs.
Architecture + Chemistry
This lesson explores the properties of a popular and durable
building material: concrete. Students will mix their own concrete
and test its properties when mixed with various additives.
