The Chicago window design emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as a response to the need for improved lighting and ventilation in urban buildings. It consists of a large, fixed window in the center, flanked by two narrower double-hung windows on each side. These side windows are operable and can be opened to promote air circulation.
