Mission to Abu Dhabi & Dubai
November 13-19, 2009
Twelve top-level representatives of Chicago-area architecture,
engineering and construction companies traveled to Abu
Dhabi and Dubai as part of a mission to strengthen relationships
among colleagues and business associates. Participants,
who included CAF Corporate Partner members, sponsors,
and trustees, were exposed to the rich cultural and
economic landscape of the United Arab Emirates, where
they were hosted by Etihad Airways and other trade partners.
The delegation returned to Chicago with new contacts,
ideas and project opportunities the region. |

The Chicago Architecture Foundation welcomed a new member
of the Chicago business community: Etihad Airways, the
national airline of the United Arab Emirates. Nearly 150
distinguished guests enjoyed a cocktail reception on the
Chicago River, and remarks by hosts Waleed Elgindy, head
of International Relations for Chicago 2016, James Goettsch,
President of Goettsch Partners, and Adrian Parkes, Vice
President of Etihad Airways. At the reception, Etihad
Airways announced that it would join CAF as a Corporate
Partner member, and sponsor a year-long series of Corporate
Partners events. |

of sustainable projects, including the Platinum LEED Kresge
Foundation Headquarters, Solstice on the Park, the Art

Peter Grannis, Commissioner for the New York State Department
of Environmental Conservation, discussed environmental
accomplishments during his thirty-two year tenure. As
Commissioner, Grannis fought to clean up toxic waste sites
and reduce damaging acid rain, and championed laws to
increase recycling and protect residents from secondhand
cigarette smoke. Grannis’ legislative accomplishments
have been recognized by environmental, health and consumer
organizations. |

George Wendt, president of Chicago Metal Rolled Products,
discussed the company’s production of curved structural
steel elements and demonstrated how new fabrication methods
have led to a design revolution. Chicago Metal Rolled
Products has worked with renowned architects such as Frank
O. Gehry and Cesar Pelli, and, recently, on the Nichols
Bridgeway project, designed by Renzo Piano, which will
connect Millennium Park to the Art Institute of Chicago. |

philosophies and practices of urban leaders and sustainable

software. USG Design Studio opens up new possibilities
for collaboration among architects, engineers, suppliers
and contractors, streamlining the design and construction

Sadhu Johnston, Chief Environmental Officer of the City
of Chicago, discussed current and future plans and priorities
for the Department of the Environment. Johnston is responsible
for creating and managing programs to protect and restore
Chicago's natural resources; reduce waste; clean up brownfields;
promote energy efficiency and reliability; educate the
public about environmental issues; and enforce the City's
environmental protection laws, including the landmark
Chicago Climate Action Plan. |
