DIVISION 1  Design: Redesign a school locker

Design Problem
Re-design a locker for today’s students

Who is eligible to enter in this category?
Chicago Public School students enrolled in a first year architecture class. Any CPS high school student not registered in an architecture course is also welcome to enter this division.

Students in the second and third year of an architecture class are not eligible to enter this division.

Existing conditions
Over the past 100 years, a lot of things about being a high school student have changed. However, the design of lockers has not changed much at all. Everything else about school has changed including the size of textbooks, the size of back packs and coats. In addition to the size of the lockers, some schools have concerns about locker security.

Your task is to redesign a locker to meet the needs of students today. Based on your experience as a student, create a new locker that meets all of your needs. You can incorporate technology into your design.

PROGRAM
Things to consider

What do you like about your current locker?
What don't you like about your current locker?
What needs to fit inside a locker?
How does a locker need to function?
What is the size of each thing you need to put inside of your locker?
Do teachers or school administrators have any concerns that need to be incorporated into your re-design? (Security issues, for example.)
What is your locker made of and why?
