DIVISION 4  Design: Bus Shelter
Design Problem
Redesign a bus shelter for a busy Chicago street.

Who is eligible to enter in this category?
Chicago Public School students enrolled in a first or second year architecture class. Any CPS high school student not registered in an architecture course is also welcome to enter this division.

Any third year student may enter this division as a second project. However, a design project from Division 8 or 9 must be submitted first.

Existing conditions
A bus shelter is a structure that is easy to take for granted. Even though bus shelters may be overlooked, they serve a very specific function in the streetscape. The presence of bus shelters on our streets also significantly impact on the way our streets look.

PROGRAM
What is the primary function of the bus shelter?
– Keep riders out of the elements while they wait
– Provide a place to sit while waiting for the bus
– Let the bus driver see who is waiting for the bus
– Identifies a location as a place to catch a bus

Suggestions
Research different types of bus shelters in different cities and read about what people think of them. How do they function to meet the needs of the riders? Are bus shelters visually interesting?
Do a search on flickr for ‘bus shelter’ to get ideas of other types of bus shelters in cities around the world.
Google “Chicago bus shelter” and read all about the design of the current shelters, designed by JC Decaux.
