DIVISION 8   Green Home Design
Design Problem
Design a green home for a family in Chicago.

Who is eligible to enter in this category?
Third year architecture students must enter a project in either Division 8 or Division 9. Upon completion of one of these projects, you are eligible to enter a second project in Division 4, 5, 6, 7 or 10.

In addition to Chicago Public School students enrolled in a third year architecture class, any first or second year student is eligible to enter this division. Any CPS high school student not registered in an architecture course is also welcome to enter this division.

PROGRAM
Your client is a family living in Chicago. The family consists of a mother, father and 2 sons. One of the boys is 8 years old and the other is 17 and about to go off to college. The mother is a nurse who works second shift from 2pm – 11pm. The father is a grocer and works 9am – 5pm. The family has one car and a dog.
The family has a general eco-friendly attitude towards life and believes in having a green or environmentally-sustainable house. They want a house that is modern, yet fits nicely into their typical Chicago neighborhood block.

SITE PLAN
The home will sit on a typical Chicago lot. The site plan can be downloaded here. You can also see images of buildings on the rest of the block for reference.

TECHNIQUE
You may use any method you’d like to demonstrate your design.
  Acceptable types of representations include:
concept sketch
drawing of the house in plan
drawing of the house in elevation
drawing of the house in section
perspective drawing of the home
hand-rendering of the house using any of the following: pencil, colored-pencil, ink, watercolor
collage to represent your material selection or design inspiration
digital rendering of your design
We encourage you to do design a model, but please photograph it and include the picture as part of your presentation board. NO PHYSICAL MODELS will be accepted.

FORMAT
  Projects may not be submitted in teams.
  Please include a 3 – 5 sentence description of your design idea on your presentation board.
  Projects may be submitted on EITHER 3 boards OR in a portfolio
3 boards maximum to explain your design idea
1 sheet per board
Project boards will be the standard 22” x 28” black mat board
  Projects submitted in portfolios
3 boards maximum to explain your design idea
1 sheet per board
Project boards will be the standard 22” x 28” black mat board
  Projects submitted in portfolios
Portfolios should not exceed 10 pages total
The overall size of the portfolio should not exceed an overall size of 11” x 14”
Students are free to use standard store-purchased portfolios (these will not be provided by the Chicago Architecture Foundation)
Students are free to design their own portfolios
