NEWHOUSE ESSAY 2008

This year’s essay topic: Re-Design Revolution

For the Newhouse Architecture Competition this year, there are two projects that ask you to re-design something that could function better than it currently does. For students in their first year of architectural drafting class, you will be asked to come up with a new design for a student locker. Students in the second year of architectural drafting are asked to redesign a bus shelter for a busy Chicago street.

Many of us never think about how design affects our lives until we encounter something that is broken or doesn’t work as intended. In the case of the locker, the size of textbooks, bags and jackets has changed since they were originally designed many, many years ago. In the case of bus stations, we notice in winter how many of them are not designed to keep us warm.

2008 Essay Question
Think about your school day and think about what bothers you about your learning experience. Is there something about the building, the physical space or any objects in the building that are barriers to your learning experience? For example, are the classrooms too small? Are the cafeteria tables too narrow? Does your desk lack storage?

Once you have identified a problem, imagine a solution. How could you design a solution that would fix the problem?

Take the first one or two paragraphs to describe the problem you encounter in your school. The remaining paragraphs should explain a thoughtful design solution to the problem.

Your essay must follow these rules:
It must be typewritten
It must use Times New Roman 12 point font
Your essay should fill one page
The margins should be no larger than 1.25”
It should include your name, school, grade level and teacher on the top, left-hand corner. This information should be single-spaced
Only one space should exist between your personal information and the start of your essay
Essay should be single spaced
Incomplete essays will not be accepted
If you do not have a completed essay, you will not be able to submit a project to the Newhouse Architecture Competition

Judging
Essays will be divided into two categories: freshman/sophomore and junior/senior. In each category, the top three essays will win trophies and will be exhibited with the student projects. The first prize winner in each category will be asked to read his/her essay at the Newhouse Awards Ceremony at Symphony Center on June 5th.

Each student essay will be read by a volunteer who will make comments. The top 3 essays from each school will go through a second round of judges. The best 10 of each grade level will be read and reviewed by a team of 10 volunteers. Three prizes will be awarded to each category.

The judges will be looking at the following things:
Does your essay follow all of the rules?
Did you proofread your essay to eliminate errors?
Did you identify a problem and describe a create solution?
Does your essay fill the entire page?
