Spend a Saturday morning or Sunday afternoon with other architecture aficionados during one of our weekend programs. We offer you the opportunity to deepen your understanding of architecture and the built environment through expert-led tours, workshops, and symposia.

Looking for Teen Programs?

Spend your weekend learning, building and drawing with the Chicago Architecture Foundation. The Saturdays in the Studio workshops are a great way to learn a new skill from trained architects, landscape architects and urban planners.  Workshops are open to all high school-aged students. At Home: Relax and Retreat to the Beach!
Jett Residence, with John DeSalvo Design

Please join Chicago Architecture Foundation and AIA Chicago for a special behind-the-scenes discussion/tour of this modern Michigan City beach house near the Lake Michigan shoreline. Dr. Nancy Church and Charles Jett commissioned John DeSalvo Design to create a beach retreat away from hectic city life to entertain friends, garden, and relax. Hear about the aesthetic concept for the design and the building process on this sand dune with the homeowners, architect, and contractor for this 2011 AIA Small Project Award Winning Structure. Space is limited to 50 participants and registration must be completed in advance. Program includes lunch and transportation to and from the house from Chicago Architecture Foundation.


TIME: (bus departs at CAF, 224 S. Michigan Ave.) 10am, program 11am-1pm, (bus returns 2pm)

COST: $50 CAF and AIA members/$60 non-members (includes box lunch)

Chi-Scape Pre-Preformance Discussion with Andrew Patner and the Chicago Sinfonietta

Join the Chicago Sinfonietta for an engaging discussion prior to its concert performance that features the world premiere of Chiscape, four original movements inspired by four iconic Chicago buildings: Crown Hall, Pritzker Pavilion, Aqua, and the Modern Wing of the Art Institute. Join composers Armando Bayolo, Vivian Fung, Chris Rogerson, and Jonathan Baily Holland as they discuss their work, describe what each of the movements will sound like, and share their thoughts about what inspired them.  Andrew Patner will moderate this rare glimpse into the creative process.  Attend the 3pm concert directly after to experience the fully completed work and enjoy the rest of the repertoire for this unusual performance.  Visit www.chicagosinfonietta.org for ticket information.  CAF members can purchase tickets at a 20% discount using the code:  CAF2013

Rivers Festival

Sunday, June 9, 3:00 pm (CSO Brass Performance at 5:15 pm)

CSO RIVERS Festival

Join the CSO to music and the River simultaneously, with a diverse array of performers from the Chicago community performing in the open-air, including the Chicago Children’s Choir and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Brass—together with Music Director Riccardo Muti. Floating from Michigan Avenue to Ping Tom Memorial Park, members of the CSO family aboard Chicago’s Leading Lady will bring music to crowds and passersby while taking full advantage of any river’s strongest commonality with music: the power to move. The celebration is timed to coincide with the completion and unveiling of the new boathouse at Ping Tom Memorial Park, and is presented in partnership with the Chicago Park District, Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events and Friends of the Chicago River. Live music and family activities will be planned for Ping Tom Memorial Park in the hours leading up to the arrival of the boat.

Visions of South Shore Bus Tour

Celebrate the people, places, and historic buildings that make the South Shore community a true gem of Chicago’s South Side. On this tour, that will explore the South Shore community from 67th Street to 79th Street and from Lake Michigan to Stony Island, you will see how the residents have acted as agents of change and put their imprint on the community through preservation, neighborhood institutions, and individual investment. Participants will learn how this neighborhood developed around a set of important historic events and how these great examples of 20th century architecture reflect the rich history of the era in which they were built. This tour is in collaboration with the South Shore Chamber and will include a box lunch from, a South Shore restaurant. Advance reservation is required.


TIME: 10 AM- 1PM

COST: $35 for CAF members/ $45 for non-members (includes lunch)

Behind-the-Scenes: Unseen City Creative Placemaking through Design Tour

Discover how design can make a difference! Explore the design of several neighborhoods and arts spaces--and learn about the vision for their futures. How can the arts be a catalyst for neighborhood change, economic development, and revitalization? Learn about and tour the University of Chicago Arts Incubator in Washington Park, Dorchester Projects, the proposed Pullman Artspace and learn about other city-wide initiatives to understand the steps individuals and organizations have taken to execute their vision to make change in their own neighborhoods; Hear from Marisa Novara, Program Director, Metropolitan Planning Council; Marlease Bushnell and La Keisha Leek, University of Chicago Arts Incubator; Theaster Gates, Director of the Arts and Public Life at the University of Chicago and artist and founder of Dorchester Projects; Landon Bone Baker Architects; Angie Marks of Chicago Neighborhood Initiatives together with Arthur Pearson of Pullman Artspace. Box lunch is included with this daylong bus tour that incorporates various stops.
