2009 JURY
A distinguished jury, comprised of prominent members of Chicago’s architecture, business, civic and philanthropic communities, selects Patron of the Year award winners from a list of nominations.

Jurors convene in person prior to the award ceremony to deliberate over each nominated patron and project.
An open vote is taken to determine winner(s) in a particular category.

CAF is pleased to announce the 2009 Patron of the Year jury members:

Stanley Tigerman, Principal, Tigerman McCurry Architects (Jury Chair)
Stanley Tigerman, Fellow of the American Institute of Architects, first established his practice 1967 and is currently partnered with his wife, Margaret McCurry. Stanley Tigerman was the founding member of the Chicago Architectural Club and is Co-Founder and Director of ARCHEWORKS, a socially oriented design laboratory and school established in 1994. Most recently, he has been named the 2008 recipient of the AIA Illinois Gold Medal for in recognition of outstanding lifetime service. Also in 2008, he received the AIA/ACSA Topaz Medallion for Excellence in Architectural Education. The firm of Tigerman McCurry Architects has received seven National AIA Honor Awards and more than 135 national and local awards for architecture and design excellence with projects spanning 18 states and ten foreign countries. Not subscribing to any one aesthetic, Stanley Tigerman remains highly conscious of ecological and cultural concerns, specializing in institutional and educational facilities, museum installations, as well as mixed-use and affordable housing.

Steven G.M. Stein, Senior Partner, Stein, Ray & Harris LLP (Honorary Co-Chair)
Steven Stein is a leading authority in construction law and specializes in the trial and arbitration of complex design and construction matters. He has tried or arbitrated scores of complex disputes. He also works extensively in the drafting and negotiation of design and construction related agreements. Mr. Stein is past President of the Chicago Building Congress, and former Board member of the American College of Construction Lawyers, and a former Board member of the Builders Association of Greater Chicago and the Construction Specifications Institute - Chicago Chapter. He is currently a board member and formerly President and Treasurer of the Design Build Institute of America Great Lakes Chapter and a Trustee of the Chicago Architecture Foundation. Mr. Stein is a member of the Board of Overseers for the Illinois Institute of Technology School of Architecture and on the Advisory Board of Roosevelt University’s School of Real Estate.

Michael Cornicelli, Executive Vice President, Building Owners and Managers Association of Chicago (BOMA/Chicago)
Michael Cornicelli is the executive vice president of the Building Owners and Managers Association of Chicago (BOMA/Chicago), a trade organization representing the owners and managers of commercial office buildings, institutional and government buildings, and their allied suppliers and professional firms. He brings more than 30 years of experience in commercial real estate as a corporate lawyer, management consultant and trade association executive. In his role as chief staff officer of BOMA/Chicago, Cornicelli guides the strategic direction of the organization and creates a wide-range of initiatives that advance the position of the commercial real estate industry in downtown Chicago. Prior to being appointed to executive vice president of BOMA/Chicago in November 2007, he led the organization’s advocacy efforts as director of government affairs. Prior to joining BOMA/Chicago, Cornicelli held leadership positions at various law firms, trade associations and management consultancies in Chicago and Los Angeles, including serving as managing partner and principal of a law firm he founded in 1996.

Sunny Fischer, Executive Director, The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation
Sunny Fischer is the Executive Director of The Richard H. Driehaus Foundation in Chicago. The Driehaus Foundation makes grants primarily to organizations working to enhance the urban environment with a focus on architecture and design. Numerous organizations have honored Ms. Fischer for her work in philanthropy and for her work on non-violence, including the Association of Fund-Raising Professionals Chicago Chapter, the Women's Funding Network, Jewish Women International (the Perlman Humanitarian Award), and the National Committee for Responsive Philanthropy, which gave her its "Point of Lightning" award. Born in New York City, Ms. Fischer was educated at Hunter College of the City University of New York. Her Masters degree is from the University of Chicago's School of Social Services Administration (SSA).

Michael B. McCaskey, Chairman of the Board of the Chicago Bears Football Club
McCaskey became President and CEO of the Bears in 1983. Under his leadership, the Bears had numerous playoff appearances and division titles and won Super Bowl XX. Following the 1985 Super Bowl, his peers voted him NFL Executive of the Year. He assumed the Chairmanship in 1999. McCaskey graduated from Yale University in 1965, and holds a doctorate in business from Case Western Reserve University. McCaskey has taught at UCLA and the Harvard Business School, and has written numerous journal articles, case studies and a book, -The Executive Challenge: Managing Change and Ambiguity. He is a member of the Chicago Field Museum of National History, the Economic Club of Chicago, the Commercial Club of Chicago, the World Presidents’ Organization, and the Union League Club of Chicago. He is a Director of WTTW, the Chicago based public television station, and serves on the Board of the Big Shoulders Organization, which supports schools in the inner city of Chicago.

Donna Robertson, Professor and Dean, IIT College of Architecture
Donna V. Robertson, professor and dean of IIT College of Architecture, and the John and Jeanne Rowe Endowed Chair, is an academic leader of national and international stature. During her tenure, she has led the College of Architecture to national prominence. Demonstrating a remarkable range and depth of contemporary professional practice and knowledge, Robertson has established a graduate program in Landscape Architecture, organized the design and construction of the McCormick Tribune Campus Center, the State Street Village residence hall and the restoration of S.R. Crown Hall. She also brought the Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat, an international initiative on new high-rise projects, to the IIT campus. In 2006 Robertson was named an American Institute of Architects Fellow, in recognition of her significant contribution to architecture and society and achievements in the profession. She has been named as one of the top thirty most respected educators by Design Intelligence magazine for bridging the practice of architecture with higher education.

Mark Sexton, Principal, Krueck & Sexton
Mark Sexton is a founding partner of Krueck & Sexton Architects and, along with Ronald Krueck, designs and manages all of the firm’s work. Mark is responsible for the development and execution of design ideas, and for the coordination of project teams. His dedication to craftsmanship, material, and detail enables the firm’s built work to express the values of modern design with a timeless quality.

Greg Van Schaack, Senior Vice President, Hines Interests
Greg Van Schaack joined Hines in 1985 and has since been active in establishing new development and management opportunities throughout the Midwest. As project officer, he has overseen the development of numerous buildings in the Chicago area. Mr. Van Schaack is an advocate for green building in Chicago. LEED certification has been awarded to 540 West Madison, One South Dearborn and Takeda, and is anticipated for 300 North LaSalle. Mr. Van Schaack serves as chairman of the Chicago Riverwalk Committee, an organization of business and civic leaders working with the City in shaping the design of this new downtown destination and assisting with engaging the private sector in its developments. He received his Bachelor of Arts in Business Administration from Colorado College in 1979.
