(Chicago, July 13, 2005) Holabird &
Root, one of Chicago’s most distinguished architecture, engineering
and interiors firms, is celebrating its 125th anniversary this year.
To mark the occasion, the Chicago Architecture Foundation is hosting
a retrospective exhibition, “Holabird & Root 125,” which
opens on Saturday, July 16, 2005.
Known until 1928 as Holabird & Roche, the firm has designed many
of Chicagoland’s best-known and best-loved landmarks, such as
the classical Marquette Building (1895), the art deco Board of Trade
(1930), and the modern Ravinia Pavilion (1950). “The story of
Holabird & Root is, in many ways, the story of architecture in Chicago,”
says CAF President & CEO Lynn Osmond.
The CAF exhibition reflects the evolution of the firm’s work—and
of the city itself—through beautifully framed photographs, organized
chronologically into five distinct sections. A corresponding timeline
relates the architecture to significant events in the history of Chicago
such as the Great Fire.
The exhibition will be open through Sunday,
February 12, 2006.
