Get a behind-the-scenes look at four historic music venues in Bronzeville, Lakeview, Pilsen and South Shore. What have the walls of these venues heard over the years? An expert from each location will provide insights on the building’s history, architecture, community and culture, while also sharing what they think the future holds for the venue. Enjoy musical interludes performed by Lloyd Brodnax King, Johnse Holt and Emily Beanblossom.

PROGRAM MODERATOR: LLOYD BRODNAX KING

Lloyd Brodnax King is a composer, podcaster, performer, and intellectual. He studied flute with Marcel Moyse, James Moody, and James Newton. He's worked with Fareed Haque, Larry Gray, Paul Von Mertens, Mark Walker, Jim Gailloreto, and Poi Dog Pondering. ​After gaining recognition for his broadcast project, The Obscure News, he was hired to help Chicago Public Radio start their broadcast initiative, Vocalo.org. ​He performs regularly with Funkadesi, Michael J. Miles, the Other Brothers, the Sun Ensemble, and the Chicago Jazz Composers Collective.

PROGRAM SPEAKER: JERRY MICKELSON

Jerry Mickelson has been producing and promoting concerts, theatrical productions, special events and a wide variety of live entertainment programming for more than 46 years. Since he co-founded Jam Productions in 1972, it's become one of the country’s largest independent producers of live entertainment. From October 1975 through December 1981, Jam produced all the concerts which graced the stage of the Uptown Theatre, including Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band, Prince, and many more. In 2008, Mickelson & his Jam partner Arny Granat purchased the Uptown Theatre.

PROGRAM SPEAKER: JERALD GARY

Jerald Gary is Chairman of the Chicago Regal Foundation and a proud product of 79th Street on Chicago's South Side. Prior to owning the Avalon Regal Theater, he created a private equity fund to separately invest in real estate, technology, and businesses in the surrounding community.  Jerald studied Aviation and Finance at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign and worked in then-Senator Barack Obama’s United States Senate office as an intern. 

PROGRAM SPEAKER: BRUCE FINKELMAN

Bruce Finkelman is the Managing Partner of 16" on Center, a hospitality collective. Finkelman has been the progenitor of some of Chicago's most well-known establishments, such as Beauty Bar, Longman & Eagle, and Revival Food Hall. He has also been involved with revitalizing Thalia Hall, incorporating Dusek's and Punch House into the project. His career in Chicago started at Hyatt Hotels Corp. after which he founded the establishment Empty Bottle in the Ukrainian Village, which was featured on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of the nation’s 20 best rock clubs.

PROGRAM SPEAKER: BERNARD LOYD

A native of Chicago, Bernard Loyd was raised primarily in Germany and Liberia, West Africa. He received undergraduate and graduate degrees from MIT, including a doctorate in computational fluid dynamics and a masters of science in business, and spent the first part of his career as a management consultant at McKinsey & Company. Bernard is focused on improving access to economic opportunity, and he founded and heads Urban Juncture, which is comprised of for- and not-for-profit social enterprises, to that end.  Urban Juncture purchased Bronzeville’s The Forum in 2011 and is working to stabilize the building as part of its Build Bronzeville effort to revitalize Bronzeville.  He and his family live one block from The Forum.
