LunchTalks@CAF: Building Preview: 150 North Riverside with Goettsch Partners

Steven M. Nilles, FAIA, LEED AP – Partner; Joachim Schuessler – Associate Principal, Goettsch Partners

As part of the next generation of Chicago office towers, learn about the new 53-story building planned for one of the most prominent but challenging sites in the city. Bounded by Randolph and Lake Streets at the confluence of the three branches of the Chicago River, 150 North Riverside addresses tight constraints of the river on the east and Metra train tracks on the west. Utilizing a core-supported structure to “thread the needle,” the design features a small building footprint that opens the base and allows for a dramatic, light-filled lobby. Taking cues from the river, vertical mullions undulate along the building’s east and west facades to help activate the exterior. The largely open nature of the base offers the majority of the two-acre site as a landscaped public park, with an amphitheater and pedestrian pathways all overlooking the river.
