LunchTalks@CAF: The Black Skyscraper

Adrienne Brown, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of English, University of Chicago

How did the birth of the skyscraper change the way that race was encountered in city centers? Dr. Brown will present insights from her forthcoming book about the role of the early skyscraper in shaping social connections and perceptions. She'll discuss literature from the turn of the century that represents how the widened scale, fragmented sight lines and multiplying vantage points made possible by the skyscraper were overturning practices of seeing and knowing race in the era of Jim Crow.
