Why does Wacker Drive have two levels? Why doesn’t Chicago
have factories stretching all along its lakefront? Who proposed
the boulevards that wind through our neighborhoods? What influenced
the architects of Chicago’s major museums to design
buildings resembling ancient Greek temples? Learn about the
historic plan that set all these ideas in motion and solidified
the city’s vision for future development.
In 2009, Chicago celebrates the centennial of the 1909
Plan of Chicago, created by prominent
architect and city planner Daniel Burnham and co-author Edward
Bennett. This visionary and Progressive Era plan is one of
the most influential documents in the history of American
cities. After the 1909 Plan of
Chicago, American cities recognized
their responsibility in improving the lives of their citizens
on a grand scale while also planning for the future. “Make
no little plans;” Burnham reportedly said, “they
have no magic to stir men’s blood.”
Join the Chicago Architecture Foundation (CAF) as we explore
the big changes and the impact of 1909 Plan. We’ll also
investigate as other influential projects led by Daniel Burnham,
including the 1893 World’s Fair and some of Chicago’s
most well-known early skyscrapers such as the Rookery, the
Reliance Building, and the Macy’s Building (originally
Marshall Fields).
This workshop also includes:
• visits to the Art Institute of Chicago’s collection
of original illustrations from the 1909
Plan
• bus tour of Chicago’s boulevard system
• walking tour of Jackson Park, visiting forgotten sites
from the 1893 World's Fair and examining its influence
on the 1909 Plan
• classroom-ready activities with primary source photos,
maps, and readings
• connections to the Illinois Learning Standards
• handouts and continental breakfasts
Please dress for the weather and be
prepared to do some walking.
