Teacher Workshop
grades 4-12

Immigrant Architecture in Chicago’s Neighborhoods

Where did your ancestors come from? Since Chicago was incorporated in 1837, people from other areas of the United States and other countries around the world have come to this region seeking economic opportunities and political and religious freedoms.

Construction of a religious center is often the most obvious way that an immigrant or migrant group expresses its identity in their new land. Such buildings give the group an opportunity to exclaim to the city, “We are here to stay.”

Join the Chicago Architecture Foundation (CAF) as we explore several examples of how local architecture reflects the immigrant and migrant group’s transplanted culture and homeland.

The workshop will incorporate many hands-on, classroom-ready activities, and concepts to use in your social sciences, language arts, math, and fine arts lessons.

This workshop also includes:
• bus and walking tours to four neighborhoods and four bold examples of religious buildings constructed by immigrant and migrant populations
• a visit to the Children's Museum of Immigration History at the Swedish American Museum
• discussions/slide lectures with noted Chicago historians about immigrant architecture
• activities with primary source photographs, readings, maps, and census data
• handouts and continental breakfasts

Please dress for the weather and be prepared to do some walking.
