Should all buildings be saved from the wrecking ball? If not,
who decides which ones to keep? If an old building is saved,
can it have a new life with a new use?
Over the past 40+ years of its preservation movement, Chicago
has had a mixed legacy. Some of the country’s most important
historic buildings remain a vibrant part of our city’s
landscape, while at the same time other significant buildings
have been lost.
Join the Chicago Architecture Foundation (CAF) as we investigate
the questions of how, why, and when historic buildings in
Chicago have been saved or lost. The workshop is being held
in conjunction with CAF’s new exhibition: Do
We Dare Squander Chicago’s Great Architectural Heritage?
(February 7–May 9, 2008)
Learn the stories of people, places, and neighborhoods, and
how the arguments for/against preservation have changed over
time. Specific buildings will serve as case studies selected
to help teachers explore the complex issues behind historic
preservation.
This workshop will give you strategies for looking at historic
buildings with your class and practical classroom-ready ideas
for your history, language arts, and fine arts lessons. And,
as always, all our activities are based on the Illinois Learning
Standards.
The workshop includes:
• photography and sketching opportunities to document
buildings
• field trips / bus tour to “endangered”
buildings and local landmarks
• research using primary and secondary source documents
• discussions with local preservationists and the exhibition’s
curators
Please dress for the weather and be
prepared to do some walking.
