Architecture can become much more than once-a-year unit in
classrooms. Seeing architecture in new ways, allows both teachers
and students to better understand how the buildings where
they live, learn, shop, worship, play, and work impact them
each day. A community’s architecture becomes a learning
laboratory where students can discover how the built environment
is relevant to their lives.
Join the Chicago Architecture Foundation (CAF) in this four-day
afternoon workshop exploring creative ways to teach the five
core subjects using local architecture. Based on CAF’s
award-winning 500-page resource book, Schoolyards to Skylines:
Teaching with Chicago’s Amazing Architecture, the workshop
will share lesson ideas, hands-on activities, and experiments
that use architecture as a real resource tool.
Each workshop participant will receive a copy of Schoolyards
to Skylines as part of their materials packet / fee. This
materials fee will be waived if you or your school already
own a copy of the book.
The workshop includes:
• field trips to Chinatown, Navy
Pier, and several downtown skyscrapers
• a walking tour to explore the work of the Tiffany
Glass Company showing the fine arts in buildings
• primary source readings, point of view writings, science
experiments, math computations, and art projects
• handouts, transportation to field trip sites, guided
tours, dinner on Tuesday, and snacks
Please dress for the weather and be
prepared to do some walking.
