From humble homes to soaring skyscrapers—buildings have
long inspired the work of artists and writers. This workshop
will explore how a variety of artists and writers capture
the city, its architecture, and the essence of place and time
in their work, and offer participants opportunities for creating
their own architecture-inspired works.
Join the Chicago Architecture Foundation (CAF) as we take
field trips to galleries, museums, and public buildings to
study photographs, paintings, murals, drawings and sketches,
and sculpture by artists and writers from the 19th century
to today.
This workshop includes:
• Field trips to the Smart
Museum, the Chicago History Museum and galleries
• Walking tours to view
sculpture and WPA murals
• Selected readings from
primary and secondary sources, poetry, short stories, novels,
and non-fiction sources
• Participants will try
their hand at capturing the essence of Chicago and its built
environment in words and a variety of media
• Workshop activities designed
to correlate with the Illinois Learning Standards for Language
Arts, Fine Arts and Social Sciences.
Please dress for the weather and be
prepared to do some walking.
