Look Up! Chicago is the birthplace of the skyscraper and a
walk through the Loop to view these towers amazes us today,
just as it amazed visitors to Chicago in the late 19th century.
Join the Chicago Architecture Foundation (CAF) as we take
several behind-the-scenes tours of both brand new and historic
skyscrapers. Join your colleagues on a skyscraper scavenger
hunt. Together we'll explore the big ideas of the structural
systems and the aesthetics of tall buildings.
This workshop will give you strategies for investigating any
skyscraper with your class and practical classroom-ready ideas
for your history, language arts, fine arts, math, and science
lessons. And, as always, all our activities are based on the
Illinois Learning Standards.
Help your students see the city’s tall buildings in
creative ways and move beyond the same old report on the city's
icons.
This workshop will help you and your students
answer:
• Why did Chicago play such an
important role in the development of the first skyscrapers?
• Which Chicago architects were innovators of this new
building type?
• How do these tall wonders stand up?
• What new innovations are found in 21st century skyscrapers?
Please dress for the weather and be
prepared to do some walking.
