Because architecture is both an art-based and science-based
discipline, it provides a natural way to help high school
teachers teach the core subjects in real and practical ways,
as well as help students explore many different career paths.
Join the Chicago Architecture Foundation (CAF) in this four-day
afternoon workshop exploring creative ways to teach the five
core high school subjects using local architecture. Based
on CAF’s new high school curriculum, The
Architecture Handbook: A Student Guide to Understanding Buildings
the workshop will share lesson ideas, hands-on activities,
and experiments.
The Architecture Handbook
is a project-based text that focuses on the design and construction
of residential architecture. A sustainable ‘green’
home serves as the case study. Creative lessons make connections
between architecture and math, chemistry, life science, American
literature, and social sciences. The book meets national academic
standards, state drafting standards, and national technology
standards (ITEA)
Each workshop participant will receive a copy of The
Architecture Handbook (teacher
edition) as part of their materials packet / fee. This materials
fee will be waived if you or your school already own a copy
of the teacher edition.nguage arts, and fine arts lessons.
And, as always, all our activities are based on the Illinois
Learning Standards.
The workshop includes:
• behind-the-scenes field trips to several significant
historic and contemporary homes in Chicago
• explorations of ‘green’ or sustainable
homes and practices
• primary source readings, point of view writings, science
experiments, math computations, and art projects
• handouts, transportation to field trip sites, guided
tours, dinner on Tuesday, and snacks
Please dress for the weather and be
prepared to do some walking.
