The Legacy of the Historic Marshall Field's Building
Originally built for Marshall Field & Co., Chicago’s famous department store has a rich history to match its significant architecture.
Daniel Burnham and his successor firms, D.H. Burnham & Co. and Graham, Burnham & Co. were the principal architects for this building. Burnham was a city planner and director of the 1893 World’s Fair. After designing Marshall Field’s he became one of the foremost department store designers. He designed Gimbel’s in New York, Selfridge’s in London, Wanamaker’s in Philadelphia and Filene’s in Boston.
This tour traces the construction, development, and renovation of this State Street landmark. Highlights include the century-old great clocks, the Tiffany dome, the north light well, the Walnut Room, and Charley’s Door.
