Farnsworth House—the famous glass house along the bank of the Fox River—is one of the world’s great architectural masterpieces, designed by Mies van der Rohe and completed in 1951. A founder and leader of the modernist movement in Europe, Mies lived and worked in Chicago for over 30 years, where he invented an architecture of glass and steel that changed the look of cities across the world.
