For many years, women in architecture received little credit for what they accomplished. They often hit a glass ceiling as well, not being taken on as partners at well-known firms. But in the 21st century, women are taking larger roles, often running their own firms and designing more buildings that impact the Chicago skyline and the city’s built environment. This virtual tour highlights designs by local women architects located near the CAC, some famous and some not as well known.

PROGRAM SPEAKER: MARY JO HOAG

Mary Jo Hoag

Mary Jo Hoag has been a docent since 2007 and is certified to give 10 tours, including the Chicago Architecture Foundation Center River Cruise aboard Chicago’s First Lady. She has an interest in highlighting the often under-appreciated accomplishments of women and other underrepresented groups, and has written tours to that effect, including “Women in Architecture” and “Women of Influence.” Mary Jo believes great stories can be told—and beautiful art and architecture can be experienced—in cemeteries, and she enjoys taking guests on explorations of Chicago’s famous ones.
