Learn about the history of Berwyn, an idiosyncratic suburb with fascinating architecture, including an impressive collection of Chicago-style bungalows.

3.5 Hours
Chicago Architecture Center, 111 E. Wacker Dr.

Berwyn was originally settled in the 1800s, but its development in the 1920s will be the focus of this trip. During that time, Berwyn was one of Chicago's fastest growing suburbs. Its stringent building codes resulted in block upon block of well-built, two-story brick bungalows. Many contain elaborate design elements, including stained glass windows, clay tile roofs and intricate brick patterns. Come see one of the most significant collections of Chicago-style bungalows in the nation. Developed along the lines of the Burlington and Quincy railroads, Berwyn is also home to architecturally significant bank buildings and historic train stations that will be featured on this 3.5-hour tour.
