Built on Belief is a Chicago Architecture Center initiative supported by the Lilly Endowment Inc. It explores the intersections of architecture, religion and spirituality through public programs, artistic collaborations and site projects across Chicago.
Faith and community shape the places we build and the neighborhoods we live in, and our city shapes us in return. Built on Belief brings together architects, designers, congregations, neighbors and cultural spaces across Chicago to look closely at how sacred space has shaped Chicago: sanctuaries and storefronts, gatherings halls and green spaces, historic and brand new.
In 2025, CAC invited artists and community members to propose new site activations for the Built on Belief initiative. Two proposals were selected as the first works to debut during Open House Chicago 2026. Through exhibitions and public programs at these sites, we're asking how these spaces have evolved over 100 years, adapting to the needs of their communities and the changing neighborhood around them.
Visit the site activations during Open House Chicago and continuing through Spring 2027 to experience these spaces in person.
