Join us on a visit to the Bronzeville-Black Metropolis National Heritage Area to explore the history of the Black Church in Chicago. Learn how historically and culturally significant churches including Quinn Chapel AME, Olivet Baptist Church, Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church and others uplifted their communities though social justice work, political organizing, social services and intellectual leadership. We will hear how these buildings served as stops on the Underground Railroad, how they welcomed new arrivals during the Great Migration and how they participated in the advent of Gospel Music. Along with a detailed exploration of the architecture, we will discuss important historical events and famous Chicagoans associated with each church.
