Book Launch: Art Deco World

Join the CAC and Chicago-based author and architecture historian Max Chavez for the launch of his new book “Art Deco World."

    Max Chavez's new book, "Art Deco World: The International Legacy of the Architecture and Design Movement."

Known for its bold geometry, vibrant color and luxurious materials, Art Deco is often associated with iconic buildings like the Chrysler Building, Rockefeller Center and Chicago’s Board of Trade. But the movement’s influence extends far beyond the United States and Europe.

In "Art Deco World: The International Legacy of the Architecture and Design Movement", Max Chavez explores the many ways Art Deco was adapted and reimagined around the world — from India and Japan to New Zealand and Eritrea. Along the way, he explores lesser-known examples and offshoots such as Pueblo Deco, Egyptomania and Streamline Moderne, offering a fresh perspective on the movement’s global reach and enduring appeal.

Prior to the talk, guests are invited to a 5 p.m. reception outside the Lecture Hall with light bites and refreshments. Following the talk, guests are invited to a book signing.

Copies of "Art Deco World" will be available at the CAC Design Store in person and online following its early September release.

about the author

Max Chavez is the author of "Art Deco World" and is an architectural historian currently on staff at cultural resources management firm 106 Group as Senior Architectural Historian. In his previous role as Director of Research and Special Projects at Preservation Chicago, he oversaw a number of preservation advocacy efforts, including the successful international campaign to secure protective landmark status for The Warehouse, the birthplace of house music.

He was previously honored as a Mildred Colodny Diversity Scholar by the National Trust for Historic Preservation and currently serves on the board of directors for Docomomo Chicago.
