Join us for a hands-on workshop where attendees create a bird sculpture and help raise awareness about bird collisions with glass.
Flyway City: Bird Sculpture Studio
Led by Evanston artist Holly Greenberg, participants will create life-sized bird sculptures using upcycled cloth and donated materials. Each sculpture commemorates a real bird that died after hitting glass and helps participants connect with bird species in Chicago that are at risk of building collisions.
At the end of the workshop, each bird sculpture will be collected and added to a larger collaborative artwork. This growing installation will honor the impact of annual bird collisions and the broader challenges facing urban bird populations.
Over time, all of the individual sculptures will be sewn together into a monumental 300-foot-long “carpet” of birds. This traveling installation will tour the country as an educational artwork, raising awareness about the effects of building collisions on birds. The full project will take 4 to 6 years to complete, with a projected finish date of 2029. To follow the progress of the project, visit hollygreenberg.com.
All necessary supplies for this workshop will be provided. This workshop is a companion to CAC’s exhibitions Flyway City: Architecture for a Flourishing Ecosystem and Chicago’s Living Habitat.
