We are pleased to offer CAFamily Studios in 2015! These programs have been altered to ensure that real learning goals will be achieved. Programs will no longer be drop-in and there will be two sessions per studio day for some events in order for more students to participate. 

For a casual family activity, all ages are welcome at the ArcelorMittal Design Studio at CAF for our LEGO Build sessions and open exhibition times. More information>>

CAFamily Studio: Read and Build

Join us for Read and Build, an exciting new monthly studio for young designers age 3-5. On Wednesday, February 4th, children will read Rosie Revere, Engineer! by Andrea Beaty and build their own flying device inspired by Rosie's creative design!

Note: Older siblings and friends up to age 7 will also enjoy this studio.

TIME:10—11am
COST: $5 per student; FREE for students of members

Designing Robots: Programming with LEGO Mindstorm

No school? No problem! Your kids can spend their day off at the Chicago Architecture Foundation learning how to program LEGO Mindstorm Robots! LEGO Mindstorm is a robotics construction set that gives you the power to create and command your own LEGO robots. Students will learn programming basics, construct robots and then maneuver them through LEGO architecture inspired obstacle courses.

This series is recommended for students in grades 6-8. Students will need to bring a packed lunch to this workshop.

TIME:10am—3:30pm
COST: $35 per student; $25 for students of members
LOCATION: ArcelorMittal Design Studio @ CAF, 224 S. Michigan Ave

Chicago has more movable bridges than any other city in the world! In this CAFamily Studio, students will learn why Chicago has so many movable bridges and then use studio objects to create their own! This studio is suitable for students age 7-12 and their adult companions.

Join us for this exciting new studio! Created specifically for young designers age 3-7, ArchiTales combines storytelling and a make-and-take studio! Students will hear The Three Little Pigs: An Architectural Tale and make their own model homes inspired by the book and those creative designers.

FAMILY PROGRAM: Open House Chicago & City of Big Data

Join us for a day of interactive learning as we celebrate both Open House Chicago and our exhibit, Chicago: City of Big Data. Students and their families will learn about big data through interaction with the Chicago: City of Big Data exhibition, then use LEGO to create new buildings for Chicago's Loop based on what they've learned. Other drop-in design activities will also be available! Suitable for ages 5-12 with adult companions.

Back to School Studio: Cut, Copy, Paste

Join us in our Design Studio for a fun day of crafts and design! Using paper, glue and a steady hand, design studio participants will learn about landmark Chicago buildings and then use them as inspiration for creative mixed media collages! Suitable for ages 5-12 with adult companions.

Minecraft Studio

Come play Minecraft with us in the ArcelorMittal Design Studio @ CAF! Players will collaborate on design challenges and move between the physical and digital as they build in both Minecraft and LEGOs. Everyone can use our server to play, but you must bring your own laptop.

CAFamily Saturday Studio: Stop Motion Animation with Siobhan Leonard

Animate community and creativity! Join us in the ArcelorMittal Design Studio where special guest Siobhan Leonard will turn your family’s drawings and doodles into animated works of art. Siobhan Leonard, a local artist and art educator is bringing her Capture Community Project, first executed at Roman Susan Gallery in Rogers Park, to CAF. Students 5-13 are invited to draw on the walls, while Siobhan animates the process. The final product will be made available online!

Engineers Week Celebration: Engineer This! Build That!

Join us at multiple locations at our home in the historic Railway Exchange Building for a day-long program to celebrate National Engineers Week. Hands-on activities, LEGO builds and presentations are designed to help families discover what engineers do, have fun building, constructing and solving engineering challenges.

This drop-in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) program is designed to engage students 5-13 and their adult companions.

CAFamily Saturday Studio: Great Lakes, Great You!

Join us in the ArcelorMittal Design Studio at CAF for a day of creative play and learning. Young designers will learn about the exhibit Great Cities, Great Lakes, Great Basin curated in partnership with the architecture firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. Their knowledge of Great Lakes will aid them in designing their own Chicago-inspired city where the water is the driving force of commerce, creativity and citizenship. This studio is suitable for kids 7-13 and their adult companions.
