LunchTalks@CAF: Light in Four Directions

Robert Benson, Design Director, 4240 Architecture and Allison H. Azevedo, PBS Regional Commissioner, U.S. General Services Administration Great Lakes Region

Mies van der Rohe, Morris Lapidus, historic preservation considerations, State Street retail corridor history, Sol LeWitt, and a pre-existing entrance design were competing interests attached to a building renovation project for the U.S. General Services Administration. Rather than tear this building down, GSA committed to a sustainable approach to both material and culture. Through the savvy use of light, this project has exceeded expectations and dramatically demonstrated that adaptive re-use can become a great piece of architecture.
