With the exception of Open House Chicago volunteers, there are a few steps all CAC volunteer applicants must take before coming on board. The graphic below shows you what you can expect from the application process.

How to become a CAC volunteer

Information Meeting

This optional, short informational meeting will provide an overview of the CAC’s volunteer program and descriptions of the volunteer opportunities available. Participants have a chance to ask questions about the program and also meet with current volunteers.

Application

All volunteer applications are available on our website. You’ll find an opportunity to “apply today” on each position’s page. Once you’ve chosen what’s right for you, we look forward to receiving your application.

Interview

Each volunteer applicant is required to interview for his or her desired position. Interviews typically last 20 to 30 minutes, take place at the CAC and are conducted by staff and current volunteers. Depending on the position for which you’re applying, you may be required to give a small presentation during your interview. If necessary, you’ll be given additional information about your presentation when your interview is scheduled.

Background Check

All CAC volunteers are required to submit to a background check.

Membership

During the first year of service, each volunteer is asked to become an individual member of CAC. Once you’ve completed your 30 hours of service for the calendar year, you will receive an earned membership the following year.

CAC Orientation 

All volunteers must attend a two-hour CAC orientation. It provides you with an overview of the Chicago Architecture Center’s mission, history, programs and staff.

Volunteer Training 

Volunteers must attend training specific to their desired position. Training sessions vary in length depending on your position’s requirements and expectations.
