Many of the world’s most acclaimed architects share a love of LEGO® that stretches back decades. At CAC, we put some of Chicago’s best architects back in touch with the building blocks that inspire the professional, and playful, pursuit of design.

If you’ve ever visited the ArcelorMittal Design Studio at CAC and seen the hundreds of thousands of specially developed white bricks from the LEGO® Architecture Studio Set, you know that we’re strong believers in encouraging design thinking for people of all ages. In celebrating our 39th Gala in 2014, we sent LEGO® Architecture Studio sets to a selection of Chicago’s most talented design firms, including Studio Gang Architects, John Ronan, Carol Ross Barney and more. Then we asked the professionals to go ahead and build whatever they wanted. The results ran the gamut, from ordered to ornate to whimsical—and even included one designer’s LEGO® portrait of Mies van der Rohe

Proceeds from the silent auction sale of these imaginative, beautiful creations went toward supporting CAC’s youth education programs.

If these astonishing structures fired up your own desire to do some brick-by-brick building—and we’re hoping they have—you can pick stop by the ArcelorMittal Design Studio during Open Studio hours. Your very own bin of white plastic inspiration awaits!
