Although our docents weave a rich and engaging story about over 50 buildings on the CAC's renowned River Cruise, that ninety-minute tour is still not enough time to share all of the interesting facts about the architecture along the Chicago River. Join CAC river docents as they share the “extra” stories about the buildings and people that make the Chicago River so special.

This illustrated talk features some of our favorite “deleted scenes” from the CAFC River Cruise aboard Chicago's First Lady. Find out what it means if you’ve been “bridged." Explore the myth of a dirigible docking station at the top of a skyscraper. Meet an African American architect who was the only woman working for a structural engineering firm responsible for icons of modernism. Delve into a deeper Chicago that was once under your very feet. If you’ve ever approached a river cruise docent after your tour and asked, “can you tell me more?” this presentation is for you!

Presenter: Susan Frost

Susan Frost

Susan has been giving architecture tours in the Chicago area for 25 years, and has been a CAC docent since 2015. She has a BA in Art History and an abiding love of historic preservation and Chicago history. The question from guests that she can never answer is, “What is your favorite building?”

Presenter: Larry Kameya

Larry Kameya

Having been born and raised on Maui, Hawaii, Larry worked his way to the Midwest seeking better weather. He retired in Chicago 11 years ago after a career in the not-for-profit sector. Larry and his wife live on the Chicago River and wave at the CFL/CAC boats during their cocktail hour.

Presenter: Kathy Kulick

Kathy Kulick

Chicago buildings have captivated Kathy since moving here more than 30 years ago. Whether the building has beautiful decorative elements, interesting engineering or just a quirky story, she truly enjoys describing them to those on her tours. A CAC docent since 2013, Kathy gives the River Cruise tour and is Co-Director of the Architecture of the Magnificent Mile tour.
