In 2021 Chicagoans were alerted to the possibility of the Loop Synagogue closing due to the impact of the pandemic. Fortunately, the synagogue has recovered, but the possibility raised concern about the fate of its magnificent stained glass window, “Let There be Light” by Abraham Rattner. While this is undoubtedly the city’s best-known synagogue stained-glass window, there are many others, ranging from nineteenth century anonymous works to some by well-known artists. We will feature them in the program.

This presentation will expand our understanding of stained-glass windows in area synagogues as we explore the artists behind these windows and what happens to the windows when synagogues move and/or close.
