Daytime Talk: Renovating Mies' McCormick House
The McCormick House is one of only three residences designed and built by Mies van der Rohe in the United States. Moved to the Elmhurst Art Museum in 1994, the home is now undergoing a renovation that will restore much of its original feel.
McCormick House is a one-story, steel-and-glass home built in the western suburb of Elmhurst in 1952 for Robert Hall McCormick, Jr., who served as the sales agent of Mies’ 860-880 Lake Shore Drive apartment towers. An addition to the Elmhurst Art Museum in 1997 included a new corridor that linked the museum to the house, but obscured the home’s main façade. Join John McKinnon, the museum’s executive director, as he reviews new renovation plans that will separate the house from the museum.
